Apple says report Face ID accuracy reduced are completely false

A Bloomberg statement today made claims that Apple company had reduced its requirements through suppliers on the accuracy level of Encounter ID. Apple has issued the statement stating that the report is usually “completely false” and saying that it needs Face ID to be the new precious metal standard of facial authentication.

The statement from Apple:

Customer excitement for apple iphone X and Face ID continues to be incredible, and we can’t wait for clients to get their hands on it beginning Friday, November 3. Face IDENTIFICATION is a powerful and secure authentication system that’s incredibly easy and user-friendly to use. The quality and accuracy associated with Face ID haven’t changed. This continues to be 1 in a million possibility of a random person unlocking your own iPhone with Face ID.

Bloomberg’s claim that Apple has decreased the accuracy spec for Encounter ID is completely false and we anticipate Face ID to be the new precious metal standard for facial authentication.

The Bloomberg piece includes a lot of reporting about the specific elements and materials used to create the real Depth camera array that enables Encounter ID. It’s definitely interesting if you want component and supply chain drama, however, many of it feels a lot like one element supplier complaining about another supplier (or bragging about how much better their produce is than another supplier. )

The central paragraph that Apple company seems to be addressing with the statement is one:

To increase the number of usable dot projectors plus accelerate production, Apple relaxed some of the specs for Face ID, according to someone else with knowledge of the process. As a result, this took less time to test completed segments, one of the major sticking points, the individual said.

It’s not clear just how much the new specs will reduce the technology’s efficacy.  At the phone’s official introduction in September, executives boasted that there was clearly an one in a million chance that the interloper could defeat Face IDENTIFICATION to unlock a phone. Also downgraded, it will probably still be far more precise than Touch ID, where the likelihood of someone other than the owner of a telephone being able to unlock it are one particular in 50, 000.

The bit where it states ‘downgraded’ is likely the point that Apple company felt compelled to reply to. The particular Bloomberg report says that Apple’s production schedule for the iPhone By was “very aggressive” which I understand to become accurate. As far as the specific claims concerning the Face ID system having ‘reduced’ accuracy, Apple says no .

In fact, if it were to make claims about accuracy and not up-to-date them before the phone released this season it would be on the hook to response to that difference by consumer advocacy groups. Which also likely prompted it to respond.

Face IDENTIFICATION uses a 3D camera array constructed out of a variety of technologies Apple offers acquired since 2013 or so plus miniaturized for use in the iPhone X. The device drops this week and Apple has brought some pains to point out that there is going to be in-store stock in 55 nations, after many reports of disadvantages. Typically, Apple launches in a number of or so territories if it anticipates cheaper stock. Still, the iPhone X is usually expected to sell out.
