Brand new ‘Hearthstone’ expansion coming soon captures the particular spirit of classic fantasy

New 'Hearthstone' expansion coming soon captures the spirit of classic fantasy

Hearthstone is harkening back to several of fantasy’s most classic elements using its latest expansion, even taking its crack at dungeon-delving with a new one player mode.

Hearthstone: Kobolds and Catacombs was revealed with BlizzCon today, and will dive in to the subterranean world of the kobolds as well as the things they find (and try to escape from) while digging and scavenging underground.

The development, coming in December, brings 135 brand new cards to unpack, a new credit card mechanic to shake things up, along with a rogue-like single player mode known as Dungeon Run.

I could talk to Hearthstone game director Bill Brode ahead of BlizzCon about Kobolds and Catacombs and the theme from the new expansion.

“This is really a set that brings us back to the particular roots of classic fantasy, inch Brode said. “It’s full of creatures, treasures, and traps; it’s similar to a simpler time that reminds a person of, say, being at a desk, gaming with your buddies, and sampling deep into dark dungeons. “

Kobolds plus Catacombs â€? *******) reminiscent of Dungeons and Dragons in name â€? captures the spirit of traditional fantasy RPGs and sounds like is actually ripped straight from the original release associated with World of Warcraft, as it will go dungeoning through the tunnels of the Deadmines.

The expansion explores the particular extensive tunnels that kobolds are actually digging for thousands of years, the treasures they will horde, and the enemies they try to escape from.

Part of that throwback feeling comes from the bounty of recent cards, and part of it comes through the new Dungeon Run mode.

Dungeon Run

Dungeon Run is unlike some other single player mode that has arrive at Hearthstone over the years.

Instead of creating a deck and defeating individual companies like in the One Evening in Karazahn adventure gamers are given just 10 cards and also have to defeat eight random companies in a row, earning new credit cards after each fight.

In spirit, Dungeon Run plays just like a rogue-like dungeon crawler, with gamers earning loot as they progress plus becoming stronger to defeat more powerful enemies.

If you lose, you already know everything and have to start back in the beginning. But with 48 different encounters within Dungeon Run, you rarely possess the same lineup of challenges two times.

“I think it’s going to be nuts, ” Brode stated. “It’s a great place to come in and begin playing Hearthstone because you don’t require any cards, it’s totally free. It is also really fun â€? the methods that pop up, the treasures are extremely unique and different from a lot of vanilla Hearthstone cards that your experience adjustments every game. “

Some of the cards and treasures, since seen above, do some pretty crazy things that would make normal video games unfair. But because you’re actively playing against AI opponents, the Hearthstone team was able to test out some insane cards in Dungeon Run.

The new cards for regular play in Hearthstone aren’t playing around.

New cards

Only several new cards have been revealed so far but they give a good glimpse a few of the larger themes of Kobolds and Catacombs.

First, will be certainly Marin the Fox, a renowned card that every player will obtain for free as long as they remember to sign in to Hearthstone on Monday, November. 6.

When played, Marin the Fox summons a 0/8 Treasure Chest on your opponent’s part of the board. If you can break this, you get some treasure. Tolin’s Cup is just one example of  interesting value you can find.

Another card coming in Kobolds plus Catacombs is Crushing Walls, the Hunter card that takes the thought of Hunters setting traps and dungeon-ifies it. Crushing Walls smashes your own opponent’s left-most and right-most minions on the board, destroying them.

A 3rd card, Gather Your Party, presents a new keyword: Recruit. Recruit draws a card from your deck to become played; this one specifically takes an arbitrary minion from your deck and locations it on the board, which could possess some devastating effects if your deck will be stacked with high-cost minions.
