White House Chief associated with Staff John F. Kelly was up for his boss, President Trump, during a media briefing on Thurs, telling reporters that he is the person who told Trump that previous presidents typically did not call the groups of fallen troops and hailing Trump as “brave” for being willing to do this.

Obama administration alumni have got hammered Trump for suggesting upon Monday that his predecessor has been insufficiently compassionate toward Gold Superstar families. And Rep. Frederica S i9000. Wilson (D-Fla. ) said Wed that she overheard what the girl considered an insensitive remark simply by Trump when the president phoned your family of Army Sgt. La David To. Johnson, one of four servicemen murdered in a recent ambush in Niger. Johnson’s mother told The Wa Post that “Trump did disrespect my son.”

The Repair has annotated Kelly’s remarks, making use of Genius. To view an annotation, click the yellow, highlighted text.

KELLY: So I just wanted to perhaps create more of a statement than a good give more an explanation than the usual what amounts to be a conventional press interaction.

Most People in america don’t know what happens when we lose certainly one of our soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marine corps or Coast Guardsmen in overcome. So let me tell you what happens. Their close friends wrap them up in what ever passes as a shroud, puts all of them on a helicopter as a routine plus sends them home.

Their first stop along the way is whenever they’re packed in ice, usually at the airhead, and then they’re flown to, usually, Europe, where these kinds of are then packed in ice once again and flown to Dover Surroundings Force Base,  where Dover protects the remains, embalms them, thoroughly dresses them in their uniform using the â€? with the medals that they already have earned, the emblems of their assistance, and then puts them on an additional airplane linked up with an injury officer escort that takes all of them home.

A very, excellent movie to watch, if you haven’t actually seen it, is “Taking Chance,” exactly where this is done in a movie, HBO establishing. Chance Phelps was killed below my command right next to myself. And it’s worth seeing that, if you’ve never ever seen it. So that’s the procedure.

While that’s happening, the casualty officer typically goes to the house very early in the morning and waits for the first lights to come upon. And then he knocks on the doorway. Typically, the mom and dad may answer, the wife. And if there exists a wife, this is happening in 2 different places. If the parents are divorced, three different places. And the injury officer proceeds to break the heart of the family member and stays with that family members until â€? well, for a lengthy, long time. Even after the internment. Therefore that’s what happens. Who are these teenagers and women? They are the best 1% this country produces.

Most of you, as Americans, can’t say for sure them. Many of you don’t know anyone that knows any one of them. But they are the best that this country produces. And they offer to protect our country when irritating in our country anymore that appears to suggest that selfless service to the country is not only appropriate, but required. Yet that’s all right.

Who creates letters to the families? Typically, the organization commander. In my case, as a sea, the company commander, battalion commander, regimental commander, division commander, secretary associated with defense, typically, the service main, commandant of the Marine Corps as well as the president, typically, writes a notice.

Typically, the only phone calls children receives are the most important phone calls they could imagine, and that is from their buddies. Within my case, hours after my child was killed, his friends had been calling us from Afghanistan, informing us what a great guy he or she was.

Those are the just phone calls that really matter. And, indeed, the letters count a degree, yet there’s not much that really can take the advantage off what a family member is going by means of.

So, some presidents have got elected to call. All presidents, I believe, have elected to send characters.

If you elect in order to call a family like this, it is in regards to the most difficult thing you can imagine. There’s no ideal way to make that phone call.

When I took this work and talked to President Trump about how to do it, my first suggestion was he not do it, since it’s not the phone call that mom and dad, family members are looking forward to. They have nice to do, in my opinion, in any event.

He asked me about earlier presidents, and I said I can tell you that will President Obama, who was my leader in chief when I was upon active duty, did not call my family. Which was not a criticism. That was just to basically say, I don’t believe President Obama called. That’s not a negative thing.

I don’t believe President Bush known as in all cases. I don’t believe any kind of president, particularly when the casualty prices are very, very high, that presidents contact.

But I believe they all create. So , when I gave that description to our president three days back, he elected to make phone calls regarding the four young men who we all lost in Niger at the previously part of this month.

And then he said, you know, what â€? how do you make these calls? In case you are not in the family, if you have never ever worn the uniform, if you have never ever been in combat, you can’t even think about how to make that call.

I think he very bravely will make those calls.

The call in question that he made last night, day before yesterday now, would be to four family members, the four dropped. And, remember, there’s a next associated with kin designated by the individual. In case he’s married, that’s typically the husband or wife. If he’s not married, which is typically the parents, unless the parents are usually divorced, and then he selects one of these.

If he didn’t be friends with parents, he will select a sibling.

But the point is, the phone call is built to the next of kin, only if the following of kin agrees to take the device call. Sometimes, they don’t. So , the pre-call is made.

The leader of the United States or the commandant of the Sea Corps or someone would like to contact. Will you accept the call? And, usually, they all accept the call.

So, he called four people a few days ago, and expressed his condolences within the best way that he could.

And he said to me, what do I actually say?

I said to your pet, sir, there’s nothing you can do to brighten the burden on these families. Yet let me tell you what I tell them. Let me tell you exactly what my best friend, Joe Dunford, told me, as they was my casualty officer. He or she said, Kel, he was carrying out exactly what he wanted to do whenever he was killed. He understood what he was getting into simply by joining that 1 percent. He understood what the possibilities were, because we are going to at war.

And whenever he died â€? and the 4 cases we’re talking about Niger, within my son’s case, in Afghanistan â€? when he died, he has been surrounded by the best men about this earth, his friends.

That’s what the president tried to say to 4 families the other day.

I has been stunned when I came to work last night morning and brokenhearted at the things i saw a member of Congress carrying out, a member of Congress who took in in on a phone call from the leader of the United States to a young wife, and his way tried to express that will opinion that he’s a courageous man, a fallen hero.

He knew what he has been getting himself into, because he enrolled. There’s no reason to enlist. He or she enlisted. And he was where he desired to be, exactly where he wanted to end up being, with exactly the people he desired to be with when his lifetime was taken.

That was your message. That was the message which was transmitted.

It stuns myself that a member of Congress would have took in in on that conversation, certainly stuns me. And I thought a minimum of that was sacred. You know, when I was obviously a kid growing up, a lot of things were almost holy in our country. Women were almost holy, looked upon with great honor. Gowns obviously not the case anymore, as we find from recent cases. Life, the particular dignity of life was almost holy. That’s gone. Religion, that appears to be gone as well. Gold Star households, I think that left in the meeting over the summer.

I simply thought the selfless devotion that will brings a man or woman to die within the battlefield, I just thought that might be almost holy.

And when I listened to this particular woman and what she was stating and what she was doing in the news, the only thing I could do to collect the thoughts was to go and stroll among the finest men and women on this earth. And you will always find them, because they’re within Arlington National Cemetery.

I went over there for an hour-and-a-half, walked among the stones, some of who I put there, because they had been doing what I told them to perform when they were killed.

I’ll end with this. And in October â€? or April, rather, of 2015, I was still on active duty. And am went to the dedication of the brand new FBI field office in Ohio. And it was dedicated to two males who were killed in a firefight within Miami against drug traffickers within 1986 by the name of Grogan (ph) and Duke (ph).

Grogan almost retired, 53 years of age. Duke, I think less than a year at work. Anyways, they got in a gunfight and they were killed. Three various other FBI agents were there, were injured, now retired.

So, we all go down. Jim Comey gave a truly brilliant memorial speech to those dropped men and the and to all the men and women of the FBI who assist our country so well plus law enforcement so well.

There were family members there. Some of the kids that were there were only 3 or 4 years of age when their dads were murdered on that street in Miami-Dade. Three of the men that made it the fight were there and provided a rendition of how brave these men were and how they provided their lives.

And the congresswoman stood up, and in an extended tradition of empty barrels producing the most noise, stood up right now there in all of that and talked about just how she was instrumental in having the funding for that building, and how the girl took care of her constituents since she got the money, and she simply called up President Obama, and that phone call, he gave the cash, the $20 million, to build home, and she sat down.

And we were stunned, stunned that she would done it. Even for someone who is that empty a barrel, i was stunned.

But, you know, nothing of us went to the press plus criticized. None of us stood upward and were appalled. We simply said, okay, fine.

So, I still hope, as you create your stories, and I appeal to The united states, that let’s not let this particular maybe last thing that is held almost holy in our society, a young man, a new woman going out and giving their life for our country, let’s attempt to somehow keep that sacred.

But it eroded a great deal last night by the selfish behavior of a person in Congress.
