MIT researchers create an AI bot that writes horror stories

Deep inside an MIT laboratory, a good artificially intelligent bot is crafting ghastly tales of nightmarish animals and strange shrieks in the evening.

MIT researchers named their own bot Shelley (after Frankenstein author Mary Shelley). They endowed the girl with an artificial mind, called the neural network, an advanced form of device learning in which a computer learns a job by relying on training examples. Within Shelley’s case, MIT researchers given her silicon brain 140, 000 horror stories published by authors on Reddit’s “No Sleep” discussion board.

Endowed with this massive tale bank of fright, Shelley is really a program that churns out its unique tales of the undead plus soon-to-be dead.

“She’s producing really interesting and weird tales that have never really existed in the scary genre, ” Pinar Yanardag, the researcher at the MIT Media Laboratory, told the Associated Press. Pinar gives the example of a man who awakes in a hospital bed to find your dog is pregnant.

Another of Shelley’s stories begins: I had simply no choice but to get out. I actually turned around and saw my mom. The girl had a menacing look on her encounter, holding a small box with the dad’s stuffed animals in it.

But Shelley doesn’t just concoct fictional dread by herself. The girl MIT creators encourage Twitter customers to interact with the hell-bot. Every hour, Shelley tweets the beginning lines to a story. Real humans may reply with the story’s next outlines, which Shelley will read plus add to.

Shelley’s MIT makers hope her autonomously-generated text will give you answers to an important question about AI: “Can machines learn to scare all of us? “

As the machine receives a lot more feedback from interactions from people, it learns how to fashion genuine terror — or at least, that’s exactly how it’s designed. This isn’t too not the same as AI neural networks learning to provide realistic faces or dominate well-known board games.

Shelley may not be really terrifying just yet. But beware: Within the deep witching hours when you’re sleeping, she’s wide awake â€? plus training to become even more horrifying.
