UPS will be giving some its fossil-fuel driven vehicles a green energy transformation.

The company has more than 108, 000 delivery vehicles used on routes around the world. More than 770 of those are powered by electrical or hybrid motors, and EPISODES wants to add to that number without in fact buying any new vehicles.

UPS will team up with the Nyc State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to convert up to 1, 500 diesel trucks to new all-electric systems.

The program, which is based in the Bronx in NEW YORK CITY, depends on $500, 000 from NYSERDA to develop and test the transformation system. UPS and transportation power company Unique Electric Solutions (UES) LLC will collaborate on the task. If all goes according to strategy, the converted e-trucks will start operating NYC UPS routes next springtime.

The UPS trucks is going to be outfitted with UES chassis sets, which will replace the conventional setup using a 225kW electric motor to the rigs. The new system will make the automobiles up to 20 percent more energy-efficient, according to the company.

UPS didn’t didn’t provide a range calculate for the converted trucks, but UES says on its site that will its uniqueEV chassis kit can provide between 40 to 125 mls per charge, depending on the configuration.

The project aims to perfect a process to convert up to three from the diesel trucks daily, with programs to transform about 1, 500 vehicles (66 percent of UPS’ NYC fleet) by 2022.

UPS is embracing electrification, plus recently made a public objective stating that one out of every four automobiles purchased by 2020 will operate on alternative fuels or some other “advanced technology. ” The company has already started to make good on its remarks, buying 200 hybrid trucks final month and queuing up as the very first customer for Daimler’s new all-electric FUSO delivery trucks.

The all-electric UPS trucks might not be because eye-catching as those decked away with T-Swift album ads, however the new delivery vehicles could indicate an important new practice for businesses that manage massive fleets associated with diesel-powered vehicles. If the program is really a success, we might see even more transformation programs put into practice as every market that depends on the internal combustion motor shifts their focus to electrical power.
