Facebook accounts linked to Russia had a much larger reach than what was previously recognized, reaching nearly half the Oughout. S. population.
Russia-linked Fb accounts reached as many as 126 mil users, according to prepared testimony through General Counsel Colin Stretch. Stretch’s disclosure comes before a Congressional hearing on Russia’s use of Fb and other social media platforms during the selection. Â
In prepared remarks, Extend, said the company’s “best guess” is that as many as 126 million people noticed posts linked to Russia-backed accounts, even though he attempted to downplay the significance of this number saying that it represented just a fraction of all News Feed content.

The social network previously said Russia-bought ads reached about 10 mil users. But it’s now very clear that “organic posts” linked to these types of accountsâthat is non-paid posts released to individual accounts and pagesâwere even more influential than the ads that Facebook had previously come below fire. The latest disclosures show that Facebook’s role within spreading misinformation linked to Russia had been far greater than Facebook previously noticed. CEO Mark Zuckerberg was dramatically criticized for saying it was the “crazy idea” that his business could have played a role in impacting on the election â? a declaration for which he later apologized. Stretch also shared new information about how Russian groups used photo-sharing support Instagram. Instagram deleted “roughly 170 accounts” that were responsible for at least 120, 000 posts on the app. Earlier, the company shared that “about $3, 700” was spent on Instagram advertisements, totaling 5 percent of the ads this shared with Congress.
Stretch observed Facebook is working with other companies, which includes Google and Twitter, as part of the internal investigation. Â
Google can also be expected to testify before Congress recently about how Russia-backed accounts leveraged the platform, including YouTube, to impact the election. Google so far found nearly $5, 000 in search plus display ads, 18 YouTube stations, and “numerous” Gmail accounts associated with Russian actors, Recode reported Mon.
In a blog post, Search engines said it “will be releasing several new initiatives to provide a lot more transparency and enhance security, inch in the wake of its findings.
Twitter hasn’t publicized its results yet, though the company is also anticipated to testify this week.
