Ford is pushing to charge its vehicles going forward, and the organization just made another big proceed to enter the largest market in the strong EV landscape: China.

The automaker signed a definitive partnership agreement with China’s Zotye to get a combined $756 million to develop electric cars within the country’s edges. The deal creates a new entity, Zotye Ford Automobile Co. Ltd., that the companies will hold equal stakes. The 2 companies previously signed a memorandum of understanding back in August, therefore the more formal partnership shouldn’t arrive as a surprise.

Zotye is not any stranger to the Chinese EV marketplace â€? the brand says they have sold 22, 500 of its little, all-electric cars as of October. The particular carmaker’s experience and presence within China will no doubt be valuable in order to Ford, which faces competition through fellow U. S. auto leaders like GM, which has already revealed a small EV for Chinese urbanites through its Baojun brand, the particular E100.

The Ford-Zotye offer is currently pending government approval (under Chinese policy, foreign automakers have to have a domestic partner to produce vehicles in the country, although the allure associated with Tesla could change that). After the companies receive the go-ahead, the new brand name plans to build a manufacturing plant within the country’s Zhejiang Province. Zotye Kia will also “explore the opportunity to offer brand new mobility services in China, inch aiming to address other aspects of transport.

Given the automaker’s focus on urban transportation and innovation, individuals new services could wind up related to public ride-sharing programs and autonomy, two major trends also capturing the auto development world.

Since the deal hasn’t been approved by government bodies yet, it’s not clear when the businesses will break ground on the manufacturing unit. Ford already has JV works with two other Chinese automakers, nevertheless , so it won’t be a matter of the company creating cars in the country for the first time.

China has been embracing an aggressive intend to stimulate electric car production, which includes a potential ban on gas-powered automobiles. The country can now add another car giant to its growing listing of EV investment, while Ford may concentrate on fulfilling its pledge that will at least 70 percent its automobiles sold in China will be electrified simply by 2025.
