Oculus Dash makes it easier to multitask in virtual reality

If you own an Oculus Rift, you’re going to love the new software revise rolling out to your VR gaming console starting in December 2017.

Oculus announced today at its yearly developer conference the “biggest software program update yet” to its Rift headset.

The update, recognized formally as “Rift Core second . 0, ” will make it simpler to multitask and perform traditional personal computer tasks while in virtual reality. It will also significantly change the user interface of the Rift head-set. After the update, when you boot in the Oculus Rift, you’ll be greeted with a brand new desktop called “Dash. “

The new Dash UI requires all of the Oculus Rift’s existing choices and reorganizes them into a main hub that can be operated with Contact Controllers.

As described in a blog post, Dash will operate as an overlay inside the existing Oculus VR software. It  allows customers to browse their games library, talk to friends, and use full-blown PERSONAL COMPUTER applications. The company hopes it will create multitasking easier and navigating documents more intuitive.

A brief demonstration of the new interface on the Oculus Connect 4 developer meeting today looked extremely promising. This essentially allows you to grab individual home windows, place them anywhere, and resize them in an “infinite” workspace. It’s simple to imagine running most computer jobs like this in the distant future.

But that wasn’t the only main update the company showed off during the meeting keynote presentation. Another important part of the Rift Core 2 . 0 update could be the brand new Oculus Home â€? or even what is essentially a virtual house that people can hang out in plus launch apps from.

Users will be able to customize their Oculus Homes with toys, furniture, plus artwork, and even choose the landscapes they could view, hopefully enticing people to get into virtual reality more often. It’s like a house away from home… but one that can be placed within crazy locations like outer space or even underwater.

Another cool component of Oculus Home is that it will let you develop a virtual trophy case to show out of your in-game achievements that you collect whilst playing games. The Oculus Home can also be a place you can invite friends in order to if you want to hang out, play games, or simply chat in virtual reality.

The concept isn’t entirely new, although. VR fans will notice that is definitely shares a lot in common with the Microsof company Cliff House, which lets you carry out most of the same basic tasks: releasing apps, hanging art, and constructing trophy cases.

Still, that is a great way to make people feel much more comfortable in virtual reality, and to get them returning. Who wouldn’t want to customize their own personal mansion?

The Rift Primary 2 . 0 update rolls out within beta for free this December. Many people dramatic enough to save the Oculus Rift’s weak sales numbers is definitely an entirely different issue.
