Russian ministry of defense tweets video game screenshot to accuse U.S. of cooperating with ISIS

Russian trolls are the talk of the city once again after a congressional investigation uncovered the magnitude their fake social media marketing accounts managed to fool us all.

But what happens when the official accounts of the Russian ministry of protection tweets a fake picture of the military operation?

This early morning, @mod_russia tweeted in Russian, The english language and Arabic a series of drone battle pictures to accuse the Oughout. S. of cooperation with the alleged Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria.

“The Ministry of Protection shows irrefutable evidence that #US are actually covering ISIS combat devices to recover their combat capabilities, redeploy, and use them to promote American passions in Middle East, ” this said in the tweet.

There’s only one problem: one of the still pictures is from videogame AC-130 Gunship Simulator.

This is through YouTube’s development preview of the online game, from 2015:

And this is the picture used by Russia, specific with area and date. The description scans: “The ISIS convoy, coming out of Abu-Kamal near the Syria-Iraq border. (Photo produced November 9, 2017)”

The picture went viral upon social media Nov. 5 after it had been tweeted by @AnuSharmaUdh and destroyed by Christiaan Triebert at Bellingcat:

Another drone image messaged by @mod_russia allegedly shows Isis automobile convoy leaving Abu Kamal for the Syrian-Iraqi border on Nov 9, 2017:

But as the Conflict Intelligence Team notes on Twitter, the screenshot is actually from a June 2016 Russia Today video from Iraq’s ministry of defence showing the Iraqi Air Force bombing ISIS close to Fallujah:
