The U.S. wants access to tech data stored in the U.K.

A people walks past the Google office working in london.

The administration of President Donald Trump has talked a lot about “securing” U. S. borders, but any agreement with the United Kingdom would get them to a little more open.

The 2 nations (along with representatives from your tech world) have been working out an idea for about two years that would force technology companies with data stored in a single country to comply with law enforcement organizations in the other, according to the Financial Times.

Existing legal precedent will not require a company with headquarters in the usa to hand over data stored in Greater london to U. S. authorities.

But a bipartisan group of Oughout. S. senators wants to change that will in the name â€? if it also has to be said â€? of combating terrorism.

Tech giants plus various U. S. law enforcement organizations have had a few recent battles more than privacy.

The Department associated with Justice issued guidelines last week stating it would (in most cases) no more prevent tech companies from informing customers when law enforcement goes snooping through their data. The statement came after Microsoft sued the particular DOJ over the gag orders within 2016.

Microsoft was happy with the new guidelines, but acknowledged that will new rules don’t provide the exact same protections as law.

As for the data-sharing agreement between the Oughout. S. and UK, the White-colored House’s National Security Council mentioned it “strongly supports” the laws and “urges” Congress to pass this.
