President Trump upon Thursday backed off the possibility of delivering the New York City terror believe to the military prison in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.
But the leader in chief reiterated his necessitate the 29-year-old suspect, Sayfullo Saipov, to be executed.
âWould love to send the NYC terrorist to Guantanamo but statistically that process takes much longer than going through the Federal system⦠â¦There is also something appropriate about keeping him in the home of the horrible crime he committed,â Trump messaged Thursday. âShould move fast. DEATH PENALTY!â
Trump made a similar denouncement late Wednesday night, tweeting that will Saipov âSHOULD GET DEATH PENALTY!â
Saipov is accused associated with driving a truck into a bike route in lower Manhattan on Wednesday, killing eight people and hurting a dozen more. After fleeing the car while brandishing what police stated were fake weapons, he had been shot and apprehended by the NYPD. Authorities said Saipov was motivated by the so-called Islamic State, and was charged with providing assistance to a terrorist organization as well as assault and destruction of a motor vehicle.
Trump on Wednesday publicly mulled the thought of sending Saipov to Guantánamo, the move backed by Republican international policy hawks like Sens. Ruben McCain, R-Ariz., and Lindsey Graham, R-S. C., who wanted to deal with Saipov as an enemy combatant. Simply no terror suspect detained in the Oughout. S. has been sent to the army prison since 9/11.
The presidentâs tweets could also complicate the federal government case against Saipov.
As the brand new York Times reported on Thurs: âPresidents are typically advised never to weigh in on pending criminal cases because such comments can be used by defense lawyers to argue that their clients cannot get a fair trial â especially when the head of the executive branch that will prosecute the charges advocates the ultimate punishment before a judge has heard a single shred of evidence at trial.â
